Football Game Recap: Newberry Comes Up Short

Wolves Fall to Tusculum 27-20 in Heartbreaker

Newberry College's football team gave a valiant effort but ultimately fell to Tusculum University 27-20 in a heartbreaking South Atlantic Conference showdown on Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field.

Newberry's Resilient Performance

The Wolves (2-3, 1-2 SAC) played with great heart and determination, rallying from a 14-0 halftime deficit to tie the game at 20-20 in the fourth quarter.

Newberry's offense was led by sophomore quarterback Dre Harris, who passed for 170 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Ahmari Spann rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

Tusculum's Winning Drive

However, Tusculum (3-2, 2-1 SAC) regained the lead with 7:53 remaining in regulation on a 25-yard field goal by Alex Morgan.

The Pioneers then sealed the victory with a late interception by linebacker Tavian Mayo, which he returned 30 yards for a touchdown.

Missed Opportunities Haunt Wolves

Despite their valiant effort, Newberry was undone by several missed opportunities.

The Wolves missed a 42-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter and failed to convert a fourth-and-goal opportunity from the Tusculum 1-yard line in the second quarter.

These missed chances proved costly in the end, as Tusculum capitalized on their opportunities and ultimately emerged victorious.

Post-Game Quotes

"We're disappointed with the outcome, but I'm proud of the effort our guys gave today," said Newberry head coach Todd Knight.

"We made some mistakes that we need to clean up, but we showed a lot of heart and determination. We'll learn from this and be better moving forward."

Looking Ahead

Newberry will look to bounce back next Saturday when they travel to Mars Hill University for another SAC clash.

Tusculum, meanwhile, will host Lenoir-Rhyne University next Saturday in a key conference matchup.
